How to Draw a Show Jumping Horse

14 steps · Medium · about 11 min

Draw a show jumping horse in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The head

Near the top left draw a sideways head like a fat peanut: big round cheek, smaller nose end.

Tip Leave lots of room on the right, and underneath for the jump.

  2. Step 2: Eye and nose

Draw 1 big eye. From the nose top, curve a line down to the chin. Add a nostril and smile.

Tip Give the eye a black dot and a white shine. Only 1 eye: we see the side.

  3. Step 3: The ears

On top of the head draw a pointed leaf ear, and a second ear peeking out behind it.

  4. Step 4: Neck and back

Start behind the ear: curve the neck into a long back, stopping at the round rump. Add the neck's front.

Tip The horse tips up at the front: it is flying over a jump.

  5. Step 5: The mane

Start with a tuft in front of the ear. Draw fat locks down the neck. Stop at the shoulders.

Tip Each lock tucks behind the one above, like roof tiles.

  6. Step 6: Tucked front leg

Start at the chest: draw a fat leg to the knee, fold back to a hoof. Stop under the chest.

Tip The folded part is thinner than the top part.

  7. Step 7: Trailing back leg

From the front leg draw the tummy, a round thigh, a bent hock and a hoof. Stop at the rump.

Tip The leg is fat at the thigh, bends at the hock and is thin down to the hoof.

  8. Step 8: Far legs

Behind each leg draw a short thin strip with a hoof, peeking out from the other side.

  9. Step 9: Streaming tail

From the top of the rump draw a long wavy tail flying out behind to a point.

  10. Step 10: The jump

Under the horse draw 2 tall posts standing on a ground line. Join them with 2 long poles.

Tip Leave a gap between the horse and the top pole: it is clearing the jump!

  11. Step 11: Stripes

Draw 2 short lines down across each pole to cut it into 3 equal stripes.

  12. Step 12: Cream and tan

Colour the nose patch cream. Colour the head, ears, neck, body and legs tan. Leave the eye and mane white.

  13. Step 13: Mane, tail and hooves

Colour the mane and tail brown and the hooves dark grey.

  14. Step 14: Red and blue jump

Colour the posts blue and the end stripes red. Leave the middle stripes white. Your horse clears the jump!
