How to Draw a Handcar
Draw a handcar in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the flat cart.
Step 1: The flat cart
Just below the middle of your paper, draw a long box for the cart, 4 times longer than tall.
Tip A handcar rides on rails. You pump the see-saw handle to go.
Step 2: Two big eyes
In the middle of the cart, draw 2 big round eyes, each with a black dot and a white shine.
Step 3: Smile and cheeks
Under the eyes, draw a small U smile. Add a little oval cheek outside each eye.
Step 4: Post and pivot
In the middle of the cart top draw a short standing box. Add a small circle on top.
Step 5: The see-saw handle
Through the circle, draw a long fat stick like a see-saw, low on the left, high on the right.
Step 6: Two handles
On each end of the stick draw a short fat pill standing across it. Those are the handles.
Step 7: Wheels
Under the cart draw a round wheel near each end, each with a little round hub.
Step 8: The rail and ties
Draw a straight rail line under the wheels from edge to edge. Add a row of little boxes under it.
Step 9: Lamp and flag
Draw a small lamp box on the front end. From the back corner, draw a pole up to a flag.
Step 10: Yellow lamp, pink cheeks
Go over your lines. Colour the lamp yellow and the cheeks pink.
Step 11: Red cart and flag
Colour the cart red, going around the eyes and cheeks. Colour the flag red too. Leave the eyes white.
Step 12: Grey iron
Colour the post, circle, stick, handles and hubs grey.
Step 13: Slate wheels, brown ties
Colour the wheels slate around the hubs, and the ties brown. Your handcar is done!
